The Itano Circus is even better than the thing where one dude cleanly slices through another dude with a sword, there's a dramatic pause, and then the blood starts to fly. Does that one have a name?

In high school we called that "pose-fu" because the attack usually didn't come through until the guy glared or posed but in retrospect that was stupid because that makes it sound like a Chinese martial art when it's clearly Japanese

Haha. That's as good a name as any.

I am sure there's a TV Tropes entry for it, but I sort of hate that site even though I linked to it in the blog post, so I'm not going to look for it on TV Tropes.

Yeah, that site is kind of like Wikipedia if you took out all the useful learning parts until only the Wiki Hole remains, and then decided fanfic could be considered a valid source too.

Better late than never, John!

I've always loved the Itano Circus! But that should be expected considering how big a fan of Macross I am.

This makes so much sense to me now. I didn't know it had a name and never realized until now that I have always chosen my animes based on them having this feature.

A better thread title would have been "20 mins of Hardcore Circus Porn" but that's probably not a good idea for various reasons.

I never knew it was called Itano Circus but I'm glad I do now. Kind of makes me wish we had a thread that discusses stuff like this without falling into fanboyisms or Series Vs Series arguments.

It was nice to see all the Macross stuff especially since I'm getting all the DVD's of the original series on netflix and watching them. Also MegaZone 23 and Psalms of Palnets Eureka seveN the latter being a pretty awesome 50 eps series with a lot of Itano Circus.

Now If you'll excuse me I have to watch the new Macross disc that came in from netflix.
PS: Are we going to be getting down to this at the BC2012 panel or what?

God, yeah. Although maybe more of an "intimate, apres-panel, three dudes in a hotel room" thing.

I'm pretty sure that's the first time that phrase has ever appeared in print. I mean, en imprimée.

I love this shit, but I prefer the laser variant, where the targeting system is so difficult that it requires a pilot of incredible intelligence and reaction speed to properly use. Beam Spam!

Examples: Kira in Gundam Seed or Lelouch in Code Geass.

Video game examples of both: Bangai-o!

Just started watching the original Macross. Where has this been all my life? Kinda wish I could start my life over again and relive it with more Ichiro Itano.

Also - circus in video game form (that sadly these shores will likely never see):

That's what imports are for! Macross Trial Frontier is actually included on the blueray for the first Macross Frontier movie. If you have a PS3, you'd be all set since there's no region difference between the US and Japan.

Still, I'm happy to see people discovering and enjoying Macross for the first time despite the very dated animation.

WAIT WAIT WAIT! there is no Region Lock on PS3's so if a game only comes out in Japan and I want to play it all I have to do is import it and that's it?!?! No Firmware mods etc?

If you want that Itano Circus feeling Robotech Battlecry does it pretty well also the Cell animation technique for games is pretty well used on the whole game.

Yep! No mods required. US PS3s will play Japanese PS3 games right out of the box.

Don't know if it counts for anime, but after this video got popular a while ago I think Cut/Slide is the most well known term.
