I haven't seen Porco Rosso, but thanks to these dedicated fans I know it's an exciting movie with colorful characters and thrilling aerial action scenes. So why put an ugly screencap of a creepy-looking dude in a trenchcoat on the cover, looking as though he's about to expose himself to a playground full of children? What kid is going to see that on the shelf at Blockbuster and say "Mom, let's rent that tonight" ?

Porco might be the main character of the movie, but there are about a million better shots of him that they could have chosen.

At least Disney's choice of cover art for their upcoming Nausicaš is slightly better. It looks like it's an original Ghibli watercolor, even if it's cropped and crammed into an ugly layout. I just got a chance to watch a fansub of Nausicaš, and it's definitely one of the best movies I've ever seen. I'll definitely buy the R1 DVD when it's released. Ugly box art or no.

I picked up the 12-movie DVD Set from Japan for almost all of the Ghibli movies which are sub-titled, so that's all I need. I saw Porco Rosso a few month ago. While it's pure Ghibli, it's middle of the road, but that's still better than 95% of other films both live action and anime. ummm... okay maybe 99%.

So far, I've been impressed with the releases from Disney so far, but I have a feeling that the reason is more because of John Lassiter's involvement (from Pixar) than Disney. Not sure who's behind this release or not.

Lassiter is still the executive producer. But remember it isn't as if he's been directing the dubs himself. The Kiki and Castle dubs were done long before Lassiter's involvement, and Spirited Away he was just a caretaker as well. The hard work was done by Cindy and Don Hewitt. I'd chalk up the quality to Disney being able to dip into a deeper, more talented acting pool since they use union (SAG) actors.

I also hate the look of the writing of the US logo for Porco.

I guess it's a theme, I also loathed the font used for the Kiki DVD, along with the general artwork. It's like they gave these covers to the marketing intern and said, "Here, go to town!"

As for Nausicaa, I think that's one of the covers from the manga...I'll have to look it up when I get home.

It reminds me of the Wings logo. That said, Porco is one of my favorite movies. Honestly I don't think the cover is SO bad, they could've done MUCH worse. His plane should be on the front though.
