Anime has reclaimed me a little bit though. I like most things Miyazaki, I think most anime leaning towards fantasy tosses out awesome character designs, and there have been a few series that I didn't regret watching - but for the most part, I spend most of my time avoiding anything involving weird fantasy situations, schoolgirls with short skirts and anything involving object retrieval for episodes on end(i.e: dragonballs, Pokemon).

This is why when John Booty sent me Volume 1 of Princess Tutu in the mail, I dawdled around a little before watching it. Given, I also had lots of crap to get done and was procrastinating a bit - but truth be told, I didn't expect too much from it. But I did watch it. AND THAT'S WHEN MY LIFE CHANGED. Given, I didn't get the puppy I'd always wanted, my boyfriend did not buy me lots of candy and my mother did not call me to say that she didn't care what I did with my life, as long as I was happy. But the warm fuzzy feelings I would have gotten if they had happened are pretty close to the warm fuzzy feelings that Princess Tutu inspired in me. I'm a bit of a sucker for cute things, and Princess Tutu definitely fulfills that inner need.

I saw one episode of this last week on comcast On Demand.

All I had to say was...wow. I am really curious as to where this is gonna go. I hope it's not one of those "sailor moon" esque things. he stared right at the girl, he has to know it's Duck right? probably not, but I loved the way it ended, with that creepy guy telling her crap and her realizing what she was.

That was super cool.

I've seen a few episodes and I really liked what I saw. The girl who gave it to me disturbed me a little with her obsession with Mytho and his tendency to run around pantless. Aside from that I was really happy that she gave it to me to watch.

I finished it a few months ago and I LOVED this show. Holy crap. It does seem very shallow at first and as though the characters might be flat. But this is really a series ABOUT character development. It's divided, in a way, into two mini-seasons. The first finale happens around 12 or 13, I think, and is a two-part finale. It is heart-wrenching in a way that few series I've ever seen have been. Same goes for the actual series ending, which takes Ahiru (Duck) from a really sweet girl to one of my favorite anime protagonists. All the characters change and develop in unexpected ways.

I recommend this series to anyone who enjoys good storytelling and who can tolerate stock footage transformation sequences.

A.

You know, I never really figure you for the "stock footage" kind of guy, John. I may have to reconsider our friendship based on this new information...
