My DS broke, but I might pick up a new one for this. My dream team is more or less put together already, so, hey.

You can grind through Pokemon in a few days if you're dedicated enough. The first time I beat Pearl it took me a little bit under a week and most of my Pokemon were around 45-50 when I did it.

Don't expect to win this thing with the team that took you through the game, however. You'll probably need the National Dex to get your dream team together, and that will mean seeing all of the 'men in the Sinnoh Dex, which you can probably do on accident by the time you have cleared the Elite Four.

But yeah, you can probably put something competitive together in a month. If not, you'll have a start toward what you'll need for when we get the league running.

Yea, since I don't have the national 'dex, nor have the slightest clue about EV training even after reading a few FAQs, I think I'll just hold off till the tournament is over, then attempt to challenge the elite 4 some day, as well as the champion

We're going to have a meeting on Monday to discuss the ban list. This will be addressed.

TRAINERMEN...

We had our sitdown, and we have decided the following major points.

THE FOLLOWING POKEMON ARE BANNED FROM USE IN THE TOURNAMENT:

Articuno
Zapdos
Moltres
Mewtwo
Mew
Raikou
Entei
Suicine
Lugia
Ho-oh
Celebi
Regirock
Regice
Registeel
Latias
Latios
Kyogre
Groudon
Rayquaza
Jirachi
Uxie
Azelf
Mespirit
Dialga
Pikala
Girantina
Cresselia
Darkrai
Manaphy
Phione
Regigigas
Heatran
Shaymin
Arceus
Rotom's Extra Forms
Wynaut
Wobbuffet

YOU MAY NOT HAVE MORE THAN ONE OF THE FOLLOWING ON YOUR TOURNAMENT TEAM:

Dragonite
Tyranitar
Salamence
Metagross
Grachomp
Spiritomb

THE FOLLOWING HELD ITEMS ARE BANNED:

Shell Bell
Choice Band
Choice Scarf
Choice Specs
Grip Claw
Life Orb
Metronome
PS: All entered Pokemon must be at least level 50, as all fights will be scaled down to 50. Held items are now legal, save the banned items mentioned on the list. No moves or abilities are banned.

All fights must take place in the designated week for their brackets. If the fight isn't held due to scheduling conflicts, the players must contact the officiators (us) for an extension or some other sort of arrangement.

In the event that a player cannot participate due to technical concerns (no/incompatible wi-fi, bad cartridge, etc), they will have to be disqualified. Please test and ensure your ability to play over Nintendo WFC before the tournament begins.

The Victor of a match is determined by whichever player has at least one surviving Pokemon while the opponent does not. In the event of a tie, such as a simultaneous death of both players' Pokemon on the last turn, they will participate in a Sudden Death Rematch. In this Suden Death Rematch, each player must choose ONE Pokemon, and the winner is determined by that single-round match.

We're largely using the honor system. Players must both report the outcome of their battle. Photo evidence recommended. In the event of a victory dispute, we will require SOME photographic evidence of a win or loss. If the dispute cannot be resolved between both participants in any way, we will have no choice but to disqualify both of them. But the douchebag who exploits this to DQ someone that they lost against will be Dome Lyffe'd so fucking hard.

(Seriously, cheating? At POKEMON? What kind of asshole does that?)

As far as Nicole, Andrew, Billy and I... We will no longer be the Elite Four. We are now simply the organizers, and regular participants. The Elite Four will be the top four runners-up in the tournament, and the Champion will be the Champion.

The Prize for winning the whole tournament will be the Title and a Manaphy, an exclusive PKMN found only in Pokemon Ranger.

Any OB Member or Friend of OB Member is eligible for participation in this tournment. Registration details soon to come.

The beginning of the tournament will be pushed back to August 12th, to allow for more people to come in to it, and to better prepare.

ALL TEAMS MUST BE SUBMITTED BY AUGUST 1ST, OR YOU WILL NOT BE GRANTED PERMISSION TO PARTICIPATE!

Any questions?

So we have to submit our team publicly?

It's supposed to be a secret to everyone

Just to clarify a point on wifi level scaling. It scales both up and down to level 50 unlike the Battle Tower, so any level pokemon will be made equal level once you set up the wifi battle. It doesn't work for local wireless or on PBR, but if all the matches are done online it shouldn't matter.

Exactly, all matches are going to be need to be done on Wi-Fi for the scaling angle, to ensure the most even playing field possible in terms of level and stats.

Can someone explain endgame training things like EV, simplified? I've tried to read guides as well, to no avail.

every pkmn killed outside of a trainer battle awards 1EV pt (atk, def, sp. atk, sp. def)

4 ev's = +1 extra point to a stat at lv 100

to be continued
PS: For example, I encounter a wild magikarp. I kill it. It awards me 1 EV point (these values are invisible, and you should keep track of them on an excel sheet). Over time, when you level up, you will notice sharper increases in stats as compared to pokemon that aren't hardcore EV trained.

This is enhanced through Natures. Natures give a 10% boost in one stat and a 10% deficit in another stat. (atk, sp. atk, def, sp. def, speed, HP) So if you want a special sweeper on your team, you'll want a nature that gives +special atk, and - to a stat that doesn't inhibit it's progress that much.
PS: EV training separated the hardcores from the casuals. If you want to one-shot things, you need to max ev train a stat (because of the way this game is coded, the max stat is 255.) It's pointless to put points into higher than that. So usually you split the accumulated values into two of the stats you want the most, so a Garchomp would want EV's in attack then speed.
PS: The Macho Brace doubles EV growth.

The PKRS (pokerus, pokemon virus) can be spread and doubles EV growth. This can stack with the macho brace for FOUR times the growth. But you can only get the PKRS once in a pokemon's lifetime, so find a friend who has it and spread it!

There is a max of 510 EV's you can spread/distribute. Only 255 can effectively go in one stat, resulting in a 32 pt possible increase in any stat. If you make mistakes, there are berries that can effectively reset the EV counter in a stat. But remember this change.
PS: Also the pump up food (like carbos, protein, etc) give 10 EV's to a particular stat, but you can only use 10 vitamins on a single stat. This can shave off some pokemon grinding.

The long and short: EV training is long and a bit annoying, but it will separate the winners from the losers!

http://www.smogon.com/dp/pokemon/ is a great resource for seeing what different builds are successful in diamond/pearl. It'll tell you what natures to shoot for and good EV spreads.

It's really only effective to put 252 EVs into a particular stat if you want to max it since you get one extra stat point for every four EVs. And the total gain at level 100 is 63 stat points, not 32. Your nature and movesets are definitely more important though and if you fuck up a little on the training it's not going to matter that much unless you play against a bunch of metagamers.

Also fuck all that vitamin bullshit, it just isn't necessary. It's expensive and not worth it. Here is the definitive easy guide to EV training your dudes in almost no time at all:

First you need to get some BP at the frontier and buy a Power Item for whatever stat you want to grow. A Power item (like Power Bracer or Power Band) add 4 EV points to your pokemons EV pool everytime it gains xp in battle. So if you battled a Magikarp and wore a Power Bracer you would get 1 speed EV and 4 Attack EVs.

Next infect that pokemon with the Pokerus. This means your pokemon will permanently double all of it's EV gains. So in the example above if you now battle a Magikarp you'll get 2 speed EVs and 8 Attack EVs.

Just keep track of all the EVs your pokemon gains through battling on a pad of paper or something. It's easiest to start training with a baby pokemon since it will have no EVs yet and you'll know exactly where you stand.

Now here is the easy part. Go to Eterna City and travel west over to a bridge where there are four fishermen trainers, the second one from the right has 6 Magikarp all low levels. With a power item and pokerus your pokemon will gain 2 speed EVs and 8 of your chosen power item for each Magikarp. That means you will get 12 speed EVs and 48 EVs in the stat you chose. Fight this trainer six times (36 Magikarp all easy) and you will have fully trained up the stat from the power item.

After six battles you'll also have 72 speed EVs, if you are training speed then great you are closer to being done, if not then all you have to do is feed 8 Tamato Berries to your pokemon and it will reduce his speed EV pool to zero.

Do it again for the next stat but take into account the max EVs you can gain so you don't max out on those extra speed EVs. Sounds hard but it really isn't.

Not that I would want to use them, but why are Wynaut and Wobbuffet omitted from competition?

I'd say I'm in for the tournament, but I have the feeling my ass would be kicked faster than a bidoof, so I'll just keep working on the Emerald national dex.
