I've never had Egg Nog either. No one in my family drinks it and my mother in particular thinks it quite nasty. I've never even encountered it in someone's home, only in the store.

also, pumpkin spice egg nog is delicious! that was our transitional holiday drink.

Through several trial runs this weekend, I have perfected the best homemade eggnog recipe! And here it is!

to make 12 4-oz (or 6 really if you're like me & Xtian) servings:

6 eggs, separated
3/4 cup superfine sugar (regular white sugar is fine too)
3/4 cup brandy
3/4 spiced rum
2 1/4 cup organic whole milk (don't skimp!)
3/4 cup heavy cream
2 tsp vanilla extract, or scrape a vanilla bean pod
2 tsp cinnamon
Freshly grated nutmeg

Separate the eggs, keeping the white aside.
Beat the egg yolks with the sugar until creamy and thick.
Stir everything except the egg whites into the egg mixture.
Cover and refridgerate until chilled.
Beat the egg whites to stiff peaks, just barely. Try not to overbeat!
Whisk in the boozey milk mixture until it's combined.
Serve with freshly grated nutmeg on top.

Ta-da! Other recipes call for folding the egg whites into the milk, but we found that it separates too easily. We actually need to make it well ahead of serving time. So I whisk the eggs whites in real good, and then transfer to a shake-able container. When we're ready to drink it, we shake it up good and pour it into cups. Grate a little nutmeg, and voila!

Real eggnog is light and frothy and really boozey. It's not thick at all like carton eggnog. Yeah, it does separate if you don't drink it fast enough. Which I guess is why it was traditionally served in 4 oz punch glass sized servings.

You could easily sub bourbon for one of the boozes, or make it a three-way with equal parts bourbon, rum & brandy. Or add a flavored brandy for half of the brandy or rum.

If you're afraid of drinking raw eggs, you can temper them with the cream first. I think Alton Brown has instructions on that in his recipe on foodnetwork.com

Eggnog is such an American thing! The base here sells "normal" eggnog, cinnamon eggnog, pumpkin eggnog and gingerbread eggnog - I have all four in my fridge right now, but I'm way too scared to try it. It looks.. weird.

I think I drank too much Hood Golden Egg Nog as a kid, because I still prefer non-boozy egg nog to any 'nog with booze in it. Mmm I just want that thick creaminess, I can drink brandy afterwards. Or... more egg nog.

My roommate made eggnog last night and it was so fucking good. It was creamy, nutmeggy, and delightful.
