(Don't mind me, I just adore Rainbow and can't fathom giving it less than complete attention. V. is good, too, though!) aUdioquark 15 months ago on 03/22/12 Equipped: Banana named "practice." Because I've read Rainbow a bunch of times and I own two copies of V. and Mason and Dixon is on loan and Vineland is boring and I don't own Inherent Vice. PS: I don't know, I guess I can handle a lot Pynchon's Crazy Brain (TM) all at once. He writes like I think, but sometimes I just need to put. Rainbow. down. ZonbiNoEega 15 months ago on 03/22/12 Equipped: Hide (Yellow Jacket) named "Rocket Dive" I read the Hunger Games book one today as I was completely out of the loop and decided on a whim to see the movie tonite. Guess I'll have to read the other two. Johnny Landmine 15 months ago on 03/22/12 Equipped: Devo Hat named "Effective non-streaking protection from Space Junk" Ohh, okay, sorry, forgot you'd read Rainbow before. In fact, I'm pretty sure we've talked about it before. Quite possibly in this thread. My bad. PS: Anyway, I just finished The Book of the New Sun at last, and since the bookstore had it in their English section, decided to jump right into Urth of the New Sun while the paint's still drying. nategri 15 months ago on 03/22/12 Equipped: Clue Stick named "Some Sense" Halfway through What the Dormouse Said: How the 60s Counterculture Shaped the Personal Computer.

Deathwing 15 months ago on 03/23/12 Equipped: Sword named "NEEDS MORE DRAGONS" Deal. I'll read it in the next month or so, now that I'm done freaking out over grad schools. I already know a ton about it and that it will probably be some of my favorite writing. No idea why it's taking me so long to start it. umaburk 15 months ago on 03/23/12 Equipped: Fire Flower named "joe versus the volcano ... and the hurricane" Instruction manuals for cheap furniture. I remember the first chapter was a little disorienting, because it throws the reader right into the unfamiliar world and it takes a bit to acclimate to Severian's style of emphasis/narration (not to mention Wolfe's vocabulary), but it falls into place soon enough. Also, you don't need to stop to look up every archaic word you don't know - but I will probably do just that when I reread it. The appendix to book one is short and helpful for putting the vocabulary in context and cementing just what Wolfe is doing with the story; you can go ahead and read it whenever. The book reminds me of Moulin Rouge, with a super romanticized view of depression-era circus life. I really liked it.
Now I'm reading Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and it's, uh, really slow so far. I've only read the prologue & chapters 1-2.
