The Legend of Korra Gets Official, Sounds a Bit Like X-Men

Somebody said:

Nickelodeon announced today The Legend of Korra, the much discussed, finally confirmed follow-up to Avatar: The Last Airbender and, rejoice, it will be helmed by creators of the original series, Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.

For those who don't follow the series feverishly, this is a sequel to the television show, not the movie and will air on Nickelodeon in 2011. As rumored, the story will follow Korra, a waterbender and the current Avatar. As the press release puts it, Korra "is not only a girl, but also hot-headed, independent and ready to take on the world."

A strong female protagonist! This is a strong step forward for television, not just kids shows.

The story sounds familiar, though comfortable in the Avatar universe. Korra, when we meet her, has mastered three of the elements - water, fire and earth. Her mission, to learn the powers of air. Hey, that's what Aang specializes in.

Rumors had it that Aang would mentor Korra, despite one of the series' established rules: only one Avatarr can exist at the same time. Good news, we were wrong. It's Aang's son Tenzin who will take Korra as his pupil.

But all's not well, as the training brings the two to Republic City, the "epicenter of the modern "Avatar" world." It's a steampuunk urban-space inhabited by bender and airbenders alike - for now. An anti-bender movement is on the rise.

Sound familiar? Certainly leaves us with lots of questions.

Will Tenzin and Korra (and Aang, come on, he has to make guest appearance, right?) be able to save the day? And can you believe it: Aang totally had sex. That justifies all your slash-fiction!

A new Avatar is born when the last Avatar dies. If Aang isn't the Avatar anymore, he died.

On the other hand, STEAMPUNK.

Steampunk VERSUS MAGIC.

M. Night Shasuckmydick can go fuck himself, I'll just watch THIS, thanks much.

We'll most likely see Aang in the series in the spirit world.

I really hope the new series doesn't give too much time to characters from Avatar. I understand why Aang's kid would be featured, since any airbender would be descended from him. Too much of "it's so and so's son/daughter/clone" can make a world seem small (see the Star Wars prequels and the X-Men books).

I could stand to see some Blood Bending and Lightning Bending.

It brings up a good point, all the bending disciplines had a high level variant except airbending.

Oh man I just thought of something. Appa was the last Air Bison. (inless some some were hiding some where) so we wont be seeing anymore of the OG airbenders in the series. Also I wonder if the last two dragons mated and/or are still alive. Either way I hope the whole Double animal thing keeps up in the new series. Heres hoping for a Owl /Puma.

If it's as far in the future as I think, I do hope for some humorous urinal/pee bending scenes.

Also, shift this over to CN's Adult Swim block.

I haven't been this excited since they announced that there was going to be a movie based on the first series! Well, we all know have that turned out! I will watch and enjoy the hell out of this series and hopefully help me forget that there was even a movie at all.

PS: I'm also thrilled that we get to watch the experience of training to become the Avatar through the eyes of a female! It should be very different from the experience Aang had.
