I adopted this patently adorable border collie mix and I'm curious about what she's mixed with. I'm prooobably going to spring for the Wisdom Kit to determine for sure but I wanna know what OB's resident dog experts think.

https://t.co/xjDeidNg

Two people have suggested blue heeler but I'm having a hard time swallowing that possibility. I assume it's because of her ticked coat, because her size and shape don't correspond to that breed's conformation.

8 months, 22 pounds, her name's Ripley.

I'm leaning more towards possible ancestry from breeds like a Feist- smooth coated, small, and gangly dogs.

Border with a setter or hound mix. The speckling on her is definitely the same kind if markings an English Setter would have!

My mom thinks she's mixed with a Springer Spaniel, maybe even a German Shorthaired Pointer. My mom used to work for a vet, and has seen tons of dogs. Those kits are pretty cool, we did one on our dog, and they turned up 95% Doberman, and 5% "Unknown", but we think she's mixed with Great Dane.
PS: Maybe even a little bit of shepherd.

The ticking on her coat could just be the border collie as well, they don't have any guaranteed physical conformation for coat, ears, or eyes. Also, 22 lbs at 8 months is very petite for her breed, so that's why I think the other parent was a smaller breed or mix.

You guys are definitely suggesting breeds that I never would have thought of, though!
PS: she is breaking my heart you guys, I am 90% sure somebody either beat her or used fucking "Dog Whisperer" bullshit on her.

it is the saddest thing to see a dog so afraid to act like a dog.

No doubt blue heeler. Also great name choice.

She reminds me of those Blue Dog paintings with those big, fuzzy ears of hers! My mom thinks she's probably a Queensland (blue?) Heeler mix.

Dude, Heeler or Shepard. It's less the ticked coat and more the big ol' pricked ears.

My grandpa adopted a dachshund and it had to have been hit before. She cowers when I put my had up to pet her, but you can break it out of her. Just give it some tine.

I agree with nearly everyone on the heeler portion of her. She is gorgeous though!

You guys are all dingleberries.

Just got back from an appt at the vet to make sure she's up to snuff on shots and nothing's glaringly wrong with her. Vet says she's actually closer to a year old at 22 pounds so let's review:

Border Collies: low end 30 lbs for females
Blue Heelers: low end 30 lbs for females

See what I'm getting at here? She's much more slender than either of those breeds, but her coloring and ears could come from either.

The million dollar question: who was the handsome stranger?

(It's probably best if I just do the ding-dang test but I'm having fun loling at you guys.)

Well, I'm never posting from my phone again.

That second photo is way better, and accentuates how snubby her muzzle is! Now I'm fucking stumped. Maybe Pointer or Setter, like Steph said? All the other breeds I can think of are so obscure that they don't really show up in the shelter system.

I could honestly give a fuck about what kind she is, she's adorable and I'm just thrilled she has a new home with a great owner.

I ...yeah, honestly I am thinking three breeds here:

- English Cocker Spaniel
- English Setter
- Pointer

They can all come in smaller sizes depending on the breeder.
PS: Whatever she is she is so precious and beautiful!

Australian cattle dog is the first thing that comes to mind (not so much any of the sporting breeds especially since she doesn't have floppy ears). It would explain the perky ears and ticking and would put her at the right size between that and the border collie half. Also the length of her fur. I'm looking at several pictures and the face looks like a perfect mix between the two.

This is why this is so hilarious to me!

Also, Ripley is now BFFs with a mini Australian Shepherd from next door. Yay!

Hah hah, I am so sorry I actually never heard them called that before. Although to be fair, when I worked in the shelter, we never got Cattle Dogs/Blue Heelers. I learned something! Thanks!

her body shape and snout remind me a LOT of my rat terrier when he was younger, so you might be on to something with thinking Feist!

whatever she is, she's adorable! love the name, too.
