So one of my biggest issues with moving away to Europe is how much I text all you lovely people. I don't want to stop texting. Not one bit. But it seems that in 2012, free international texting does not exist. At least not BOTH ways.

Even if I go to Paris and get a cell phone plan with unlimited international texting, any time someone in America replies to me it will actually cost them 10 cents or more per text, (unless you have T-Mobile's 5 dollar a month unlimited international texting plan).

Obviously I am aware of just emailing back and forth and having my notifications turned on, but not everyone has their email at their fingertips like they would a cell phone text message. Same goes for AIM. AIM on my phone would only solve part of the problem. I have done some research and found some apps that provide international texting between people, but only if they both have the app.

So, does anyone know of anything I am possibly missing in my research? I'm running out of options here and I am going to miss you all so much if I can't send dick pictures on a whim.

I've never been able to find a good international texting solution. I just use whatsapp, but that's one of those where you both need to have the app. :(

whatsapp is one of the best international texting apps there is.

Also you can also use viber for making international phone calls. Viber works like skype in that it uses your data plan and not your minutes to make phone calls. Works best as long as you have strong internet signal.

I use both apps to keep in touch with family from London, and co-workers from India & Singapore.

If you have Andriod you might be able to setup Google voice and use that for SMS, i haven't tried it personally but I have heard reports of it working.

The big thing here is KakaoTalk, but again, both people need it. A neat thing it does though is automatically adds people through your phone's contacts.

Make a google voice acct before you leave. Free calls and texts via email to the states. Its pretty much my goto for talking to folks back home.
PS: urg... what Chrispy said. I am reading fail.

Yeah but doesn't google voice still send a text message to your phone? I mean, that's what mine does.

I use What's App to text between a few friends overseas, works great but they need a smart phone to install it.

My Google Voice doesn't, it all goes to email.

Dont get the google chat app, thats just the messenger which will charge you for texts, you need to get an actual google voice number. Then you can call or txt from a computer, or with a bit of work make it work on a phone.

I havent been able to do any voip calls here through vodafone though, so I cant comment on how to set that up.

You can send and receive the texts on the Google voice website even without a phone. If you have an Android phone the Google voice app can send and receive sms without using the carrier at all. Ive used on a deactivated phone just using wifi

That sounds perfect. I bet there's a version out there without the chunk too.

My friend uses Google Voice exclusively for texts. Apparently he just needed to setup his android to use it, but it seems pretty legit.

iPhone has iMessage, which I use to text my friend in Japan for free, but it only works if you both have iPhones. I had no idea you could text through Google Voice and now I want to check that out!

You can send texts through the internet provider's website.

Here's an example for Verizon: https://text.vzw.com/customer_site/jsp/messaging_lo.jsp

Its a hassle because you must know the person's provider, but at least if you have people you regularly message you can do it free.
PS: Not internet, I mean PHONE provider.

Google voice works if you made an account in the US. I was using it a shit load when I was in St Martin and UK. Only works for US to US though.
PS: Domestic Us numbers I mean.

Found another one you might want to look at. Don't know if it's any good, but HeyWire seems to also make a stateside number, so technically someone in the States can reply to you without having to pay extra international charges (and doesn't require both parties to have the app). I'll have to try this out myself too.

So after looking more into google voice, I think it might be the way to go.

My goal is to port over my existing cell phone number to my google voice account, forcing the termination of my verizon wireless subscription. That way, none of you guys would need a new number from me.. you would just text the number you have always texted. Then, when I go to France with my brand new, American, unlocked smartphone, I will get a calling plan and French sim card.

My concern is if I will be able to download the google voice app for Android while I am in France. If i can, then I am guaranteed to have seemless texting without having to make my friends get any silly messenger apps. Almost as if my current dumbphone was being emulated in my smartphone. The problem is I cant seem to find any documentation on if the google voice app is available in France. Really frustrating.

(I just sent this message to Monkeygod in a PM, but I'd like everyone's input if you guys have any)
