So this is out? Are the diehards playing it? Is it awesome, decent, or will it make me spoon out my guts from disappointment? I gotsta know!

From what I've read, the opening scene sounds completely sweet. But I've heard it's... problematic after that. Any reviews from the Silent Hill faithful?

give me until after friday I'll tell you guys what I think. I have read that the 360 verson is less glitchy but I bought the PS3 one. So far the pro reviews not so hot from ok to bad. The fan reivews give it higher and good praise.

So far fighting is hard, makes me want to run away then face the enemy's. I will say it HAS scared me a few times and I just made it into Silent Hill. Already one surprise that I'm happy about...the town looks amazing I love the houses and the back yards are great, makes me really feel like saying "now this is silent hill". Also little touches in it are nice, random candles in a back yard on a drum, me losing my flash light after a moment of almost falling in one part...which for a bit I can use my light for light to see stuff but I cant run or use my weapon as I hold it up...I figured crap no flash light now but it looks like others are randomly around town. They really put in a lot of little things that I'm pleased with so far. Also I played my friends copy of a burned 360 one and I'm also playing my PS3 one...so far the xbox had a few hang ups in certain spots which I have NOT seen ANY in the PS3 version.

Is fighting hard like, badly programmed, or is the game just geared to make you run more than fight? Because the latter is how SH should always be.

I really tried to care about this, but the trailers are terrible and I am not in the least excited.

This is fairly similar to my position. I used to be so balls-deep in Silent Hill that I ran Silent Hill panels at cons. Haven't played since SH4, though, except for a few minutes of Origins.

A small part of me wants to give this a try (perhaps when it's $9 at the trade-in store) but mostly I just want Team Silent to be a real thing again.

Every thing you just said. I didn't even play sh5, I played a few minutes of Origins, and lost all interest in anything new that comes out.

They lost me about two hours into 4.

The bit about how cool the houses and backyards are makes me want to check it out, though. That was always my favorite thing, the sense of the place being a real town, with a real street layout, rows of real houses, alleys, etc.

I haven't gotten nearly as much play time with this as I'd like. Been working split-shifts and haven't gotten a full weekend in three weeks (Right when I have an avalanche of games that deserve proper attention, too). What I can gather is they have the right attitude. I liked bits of the American Silent Hill games and I actually thought Shattered Memories was pretty good, but they all suffered from one vital flaw that held them back: They felt the need to MAKE SENSE! I mean, they each had their own other problems (Homecoming's reliability on the movie's aesthetic, for instance. Sorry, designing a world to be just like a furnace isn't that scary in comparison to bleeding walls of flesh), but it seemed like they all had to have too much explanation for it.

See, Silent Hill is best when it feels like there's some malicious force in the background that is constantly fucking with you for no rhyme or reason. In Downpour, it seems to get that and has little details like when you cycle back to a previously-empty bathtub after exploring for a little, it's suddenly filled with blood. And it has the classic Silent Hill hero who is a bit too calm for what he's going through. I mean, he's rummaging through a house with a dead dog on the bed and he only gives a shit about the coffee machine not having a cord?

It seems to get the attitude and style without trying to be a pale imitator like Origins. The music recognizes the style Akira Yamaoka set up, but doesn't try to completely copy it. That's not to say it's perfect. The combat is clunky and shit and devises a blocking system where apparently if you try to hit a monster who tries to block a butcher knife by lifting it arms up, it completely blocks it whereas if you try to block with a perfectly solid object, it will sometimes break through. The monsters seem entirely too plain as well. I mean, this is a series where one of the monsters is based on a bed where someone is getting raped. A woman with a bloody housedress that punched you with nails is kind of plain in comparison.

But again, I'm still in the early parts of the game. If anything else, its heart is in the right place.

I loved SH4. I am still surprised after all these years to hear people gave up on the entire series after making it less than halfway through 4.

I played 4. It was ok. I loved the soundtrack, and a lot of the premise and nearly everything about the apartment. Sadly, there was a lot of time spent in places that were not the apartment.
PS: Like the swords? Stupid. Unkillable ghosts that follow you everywhere? Stupid. Monkey/ape enemies? Stupid.

The burping nurses marks what was the beginning of the end of my enjoyment of 4. Then playing through almost the exact same levels AGAIN was the end. I made it through the game, but I only played it again so a friend could watch it (I'm the designated "Guy who plays through survival horror games because everyone else is too scared or gets lost within 5 minutes").

Whats the best way to catch up on the SH series. Honestly I've never played any of them and I really want to start from the beginning.

Play 1 and 3 in order.
You can then play the rest in any order you want really. But I would suggest 2, then 4, then Origins, then Homecoming. And skip the one for the Wii entirely. Just pretend it doesn't exist. That's what I do.

Is 1 available for PS3 either through the store or a rerelease? I see they are coming out with Silent Hill HD very soon that has 2 and 3 for the PS3.

Your suggested order is 1, 3, 2, 4, Origins, Homecoming?

They say that SH1 is available for download in the PS3 Store.

And yeah, that is my suggested order. A lot of people might tell you to play 2 first since it is a fan favorite, but I think you need to get the main canon story of Silent Hill done first, and that would be 1 and 3.

I still say one was the best and most moving with some of the graphical things seen in it. I really loved the demonic world in that one! Plus the drive of the father to find his daughter despite it all was the best plot to start off to show us such a crazy setting and world that would have lesser people ditching out of town so soon after thw first scare. Id love to see one with todays graphics.
