Submitted mine at 11:58pm last night and got a buttload back. Owning a house and paying mortgage interest REALLY helps!

I had a refund of around $1500, realized that I didn't add certain forms and federal owes me about $2500 more on my amended. So I look forward to that sometime at the end of May before BC though.

And I got a new job that pays more so I'm not sure about my exemptions or how many to put. :( I have never owed taxes and I do not want to start now.

My last long-term job didn't take out state or federal taxes, which had completely slipped my mind until I got my tax return. I still got a little bit back from temp jobs, so I fared better than some.

Any of you guys do your own taxes or do taxes for other people? We just got ours done and I think the girl had to have made a mistake. We have NEVER owed federal taxes. And since we were self-employed last year I knew we'd owe some state taxes because we did the year before. So it was a matter of how we'd probably get back a little bit of federal and pay some state, like last year.

But somehow we are getting a small refund from state and owe a shitton in federal. I'm about to have a heart attack. I know we make a little more money than last year but god damn if I can see how we how that equates to having to pay 53% of our taxable income. We are not that fucking well off.

I don't even know what I'm asking for but anyone have any advice or ideas? We got our taxes done for free at Uma's bank like we did last year. Thiis is some bullshit and makes no fucking sense. We kept our copy and told the girl we weren't filing anything until we had the weekend to talk it over and check it out because even she knew we were freaked the fuck out by the drastic change.

Back in like, 2007 I got a year behind on my taxes, as I was self-employed and honestly just went through a turbulent time involving the loss of a parent and wasn't paying attention to shit like taxes.

As of next month I'll finally be caught up.

It's not that I owed some ridiculously huge amount; it's just that by the time I'd paid 2007's back taxes, 2008's taxes were due, and I wouldn't have any money since I'd been busy paying off 2007's taxes, so I was always a year behind for five years.

So that'll be nice.

I got back just a little over $1200 combined this year. This year, I'll be using my refund to catch up on the credit card payments that I'm behind on.

As self employed were you on a W2 or a 1099? As a 1099 you would pay less taxes because you can claim a lot more off and pay yourself less money.

I used to pay for an accountant to do my taxes, but then I noticed some oddities. I noticed an HR Block logo on one of the bills he sent me. I realized that fucker wasn't doing his due diligence and just inputting numbers into some software. He wasn't interested in giving me my maximum deduction, he was just going thru the motions and inputting whatever numbers I gave him.

I once used HR Block in the past and realized for a $25-35$ fee they just filed a 1040EZ, which I used to do by myself. I stopped using HR Block once I figured out those guys were scam artists.

I ended up buying TurboTax and did the taxes myself, I was able to explore every option and maximize every bit of my return. When I first used TurboTax, I didn't know I could claim my mother as a dependent, didn't know that some home repairs I had contracted out were able for tax exemption, house taxes, and many other things. Now I'm only using TurboTax cuz I can take the 30-40 mins and go thru every option there is to see if I qualify for a tax refund or not.

Rexall, 1099s! Last year we didn't owe a thing in federal. The only difference this year is we made a little more and we don't get the EIC becsuse Kasey turned 17 last year. We knew that would take about $1000 off our federal refund. But we thought we'd still have some refund. Instead, the girl at the bank who did our taxes this year and last year is saying we owe $3400 in federal taxes.

Last year we owed a couple hundred to the state. This year she says we are getting a couple hundred refund from the state. That also doesn't make sense to me. We were actually thinking we'd owe more in state taxes this year.

Regardless, the numbers she gave us have us paying 53% of our taxable income to federal.

I heard H&R Block will take a look at your taxes to see if they're correct for free. Is that a good option? I really don't want to pay a shitload to someone to look at our paperwork if I can help it. I just really want someone who knows about this stuff to check behind her so I know she hasn't just totally lost her fucking mind.

I take standard deductions so I decided to use a free service offered by H&R Block called The Hive. I do claim my mom as a dependent but nothing fancy as I don't own any property etc. There's no fee for anyone that makes under $57k. I also put my information in with Turbo Tax, whom I have used for years just as a comparison. Both serviced yielded me the same money...so why should I use Turbo Tax when the basic service got me the same for free?

I filed my taxes last week and both state & federal have been accepted. NY state e-mailed me today saying "The New York State Tax Department issued your personal income tax refund" as I signed up for alerts from tax.ny.gov.

I'll be getting over $3k back combined. With the money, it'll be used to pay off my last private student loan from Discover. I'm also going to give mom almost $1k, which will help with her moving expenses next month.

I used the Hive too and did mine through H&R block. I'm getting back around 6k which is great to pay off a lot of my moving debt and take a chunk out of my student loans so I'll have lower payments. The best part though is I did them last Saturday and I woke up with a notice saying I should have my refund by Monday, yay! But Lisa I would definitely get a second opinion.

Talked to a lady at H&R Block and have an appt at 3 today to get a Second Look done. If all the numbers are the same there is no charge. If they change anything and do the filing we have to pay $99. Uma's freaking over the possible $99. I'm just thinking that if the numbers are the same I'm going to jump off a bridge.

Hope it goes well. Glad to hear others have had good experiences with H&R, I must've had a bad experience.

Honestly though as a 1099, I am surprised you do not write off your cell phone bills, maybe some rent. I'm assuming you use ADP, to cut your checks. Also surprised you don't do your taxes quarterly.

Welp. The numbers were right. Apparently losing that education credit once Kasey hit 17 added to Sean and I making more money last year fucked us over. Self-employment fucking stinks.

Good news is the H&R Block lady was on top of shit and helped us figure out that since no one ever asked us or told us we can file amendments for the last few years for Dylan's college loans. By the time we get those adjustments done it'll probably end up being close to equaling what we're supposed to pay in taxes. Have to take the appropriate paperwork back Monday.
