What is “CISPA”?

EFF said:
CISPA stands for The Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, a cybersecurity bill written by Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI) and Dutch Ruppersberger (D-MD) (H.R. 3523). The bill purports to allow companies and the federal government to share information to prevent or defend from cyberattacks. However, the bill expressly authorizes monitoring of our private communications, and is written so broadly that it allows companies to hand over large swaths of personal information to the government with no judicial oversight—effectively creating a “cybersecurity” loophole in all existing privacy laws. Because the bill is so hotly debated now, unofficial proposed amendments are also being circulated and the actual bill language is in flux.

HERE IS WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN AND WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO DO WHEN CALLING:

1. You will reach a staffer when you call.

2. Tell them who you are and which zip code you represent.

3. Ask what that representatives stance on the issue is. In some cases the answer might be that they have not yet decided.

4. Explain your stance on the issue and why you want your representative to vote NO. This will be pretty easy because CISPA is fucking evil.

5. You might be asked for an address. You will be told the message will be relayed to your representative.

Most of all, be polite and well informed. The staffers are generally pretty nice. Even if they aren't, you should still be nice.

Also, please do NOT call through your computer like the above link gives you the option to do. Staffers will know you're calling from sites like that and will be less likely to care about what you're saying. Also make sure to only call whoever represents where you're from.

Calling Monday.

Definitely gonna call. i know it still has to pass in the Senate and then Obama still has to sign it if that happens. He said he was against it, but after the NDAA passed I have no faith that he'll keep his word this time around again.

I'm going to call Dutch directly. I'm curious why. He is not the kind to be pushed over by companies.
