I feel like every time I check my damn email, I am unsubscribing from 20 new mailing lists that have somehow found me that I just don't give a shit about. Does anyone find these things helpful anymore, or just annoying? Do you actually use or like any mailing lists?

Please keep your list short, don't rattle off a block of 20, no one will read that.

Groupon's approximately 5 different lists and all of the groupon clones
When it was a daily email telling me about whatever was going on, that's fine. But now there's groupon vacations and groupon "now" or what the fuck ever, and this one company now sends me at least 3 emails a day, sometimes more! I know I can manually sign in and select what I want to see, but man, that shit is annoying. Not to mention, there are five or so other companies (thrillist, youswoop, etc) that I've somehow gotten onto the mailing list of, and so my inbox is basically just a pile of "offers." It's as bad as junk mail used to be.

local shops
I still like to get emails from individual local shops, because they a) tend to be pretty plain and straightforward b) completely relevant to the shop c) not full of bright red numbers, shiny graphics, and other bullshit marketing d) sent infrequently. Reminding me EVERY FUCKING DAY that your company exists makes me annoyed and also makes me skim over your damn newsletters, but if you only send one once a month, maybe once every few weeks, it's a pleasant reminder that I haven't been to a certain place in a while.

Sometimes I just need to cool off, and perhaps have a few laughs with people I really connect with. This is also a good place to discuss matchbook collecting!

I like the "What's New Now" emails I get from Ziff Davis. Good tech news stuff.
