It basically wasn't a thing when I was in high school and think that will keep me forever out of the loop.
Obviously if you're around my age AIM ruled the day in the early aughties. Now my messaging seems to have Balkanized into a smattering of gchat, facebook, and, sometimes, twitter. People who are Way Into Twitter (e.g. ME) tend to use it as a rolling, somewhat asynchronous chatroom. I wish more people would jump on that particular usage-bandwagon because twitter friggin RULES when you use it that way.
