Let's not forget IRC now. That is a medium that is still very much alive, especially if you're into some open-source projects and have made a home on Freenode (which splits more often than Undernet used to).

I don't and have never used AIM. I use YIM and FB Chat daily. More people need to say hello to me when I'm online. I can ramble on with the best of them.

I think I'm like two years older than I would have to be to ever truly understand how the fuck to use text messaging. It basically wasn't a thing when I was in high school and think that will keep me forever out of the loop.
Obviously if you're around my age AIM ruled the day in the early aughties. Now my messaging seems to have Balkanized into a smattering of gchat, facebook, and, sometimes, twitter.
People who are Way Into Twitter (e.g. ME) tend to use it as a rolling, somewhat asynchronous chatroom. I wish more people would jump on that particular usage-bandwagon because twitter friggin RULES when you use it that way.

I almost always have my AIM and MSN messengers on my droid, otherwise I never sign in to them on an actual computer. Gtalk is just there if needed, again mostly through my droid and for facetime.
