I'm so sad right now...David Bowie was my introduction into things "not mainstream" in the late 90's/early 00's. David Bowie is the reason I was comfortable enough in my nerd-dom to join a site like OB in my early 20's.

RIP Major Tom!

I wasn't even aware he was battling cancer. Not even sure if it was something that was really mentioned in the media. He was an avid smoker, that much I knew. I remember buying some Greatest Hits album of his when I was 15 and warping the CD from playing it so much. One of the greatest influences in music history for an absurd amount of musicians and artists (myself included). There will never be another Bowie.

First Lemmy, now Bowie. The world is gunning for luminaries these past few weeks.

Been a rough couple of weeks for music, but isn't it great how years back we all had David Bowie related names on the forums? And isn't it great how we can revert to old names at any time?

I think it's pretty great.

I apologize for how buried it is, but this is where you can revert to old member names:

The death of David Bowie hit me very hard. There are artists who are supremely talented, and there are artists who stand for something larger than themselves, and Bowie was a bit of both.

I read one tribute to him that put it well: his cosmic sci-fi stories were somehow more real than reality; they were universal and more heartfelt than anything strictly autobiographical in a literal sense could ever have been.

I saw David Bowie play in 1997 and it was by far the best show I've ever seen. He was just a consummate performer. He was the kind of frontman that could effortlessly wrap an audience around his finger.

What a loss. I love that he was Bowie right up until the end, too: he turned 69, dropped an album about dying, and left.

Fuckin' showbiz royalty to the end.

There's a part of me that thinks that no legend ever really dies. They just recognize it's time to leave, and they return to their homeworld, leaving us small humans to ponder the gifts they left behind while they called our home their home.

Looks like Bowie produced three additional albums beyond Black Star, all to be released posthumously. The next one will be released in 2017:
