I am being 100% sincere when I say that "Dark Dungeons" is one of my favorite things of all time. While the world is better off without this guy's teachings, I am (selfishly) a little bit sad.

Dark Dungeons

https://www.chick.com/reading/tracts/0046/0046_01.asp

I cannot even tell you how much I love this comic, created to scare kids and parents away from Dungeons and Dragons. The fact that she goes from tabletop gaming to being surrounded by hooded figures in approximately three panels, the preacher's uncanny resemblance to legendary porn star John Holmes... everything.

Dork Dungeons

The parody we created 10 (!!!) years ago.

Here's my second favorite Chick Tract. A Christian rock group sells out... TO SATAN!

A guy in my neighborhood used to give these tracts out in place of Halloween candy. He is now in jail for touching kids.

HAHAHA. That was my first experience with them too - there was a house in the neighborhood that handed them out on Halloween.

Luckily I don't think they were kid-touchers.

There's a live action film adaptation of Dark Dungeons which is pretty good. I mean, it's not good, but would you really want it to be?

I don't often say this after someone has died, but good riddance. Jack Chick helped make the world an ugly place and I'm really glad he's dead.

I found one of his a few years ago and had no idea. I think I still have it for laughs.
Shit is insane on the bigot scale.

I very often say it after people die! And I don't feel bad about it!

Someone used to put these on the tops of our high school urinals. Even back then (when I was still a believer) I was really disgusted by the fear-mongering of them.

So I would dutifully place them in the urinal and piss all over them. Eventually the janitor would complain, and they were banned. A win for everyone.

I heard of these, and him, through internet lore. But I don't think I've ever seen an actual Chick tract in person.

RIP to one of the best unintentional comedians of all time.

I had gotten a few of his comics in my youth, never the infamous Dark Dungeons, sadly.

I got a lot of sardonic amusement in my youth, holding up those comics like a bad student's homework in the teacher's lounge. Now that bit older and more mellow I can definitely say "Burn in hell, you mother fucker."

The best reason that it's good that he's dead is it's opened the door for calling people who don't know any Chick Tracts other than Dark Dungeons "Fake Chick Geeks."

You know, this spurs something in me. When Antonio Scalia died, a lot of 18yo Bernie fans were rioting in the streets with joy. I understood that they disagreed with his politic, fully, but I didn't understand why they took joy in the death of another human being that was attempting to do what he, attempting (unsuccessfully though he may have been) to operate in a vacuum, believing was the best course for the judicial system.

It's as though reveling in the death of those who disagree with us is the newly acceptable way to say, "yay! They lost!"

I don't know if this changes your mind or not, but it might at least explain these reactions...

Have you read any of the more fucked-up Chick Tracts like "Gay Blade?"

"Dark Dungeons" is downright innocuous and we all love it because it's basically a geek's version of Reefer Madness.

Unfortunately though, it's something of an outlier. A lot of Chick Tracts are just really dark and hateful. Pure, hateful shit about how the Jews will burn in hell, how gays deserve AIDS and how they'll burn in hell, shit like that.

I'll never be glad when somebody dies simply because I disagree with them.

However, I don't believe somebody should gain magical powers of respect just because they died.

And if somebody's in a position of power, and they use that power to push shitty views on people, and their death stops that from happening, then I'm glad when they die.

Scalia's not just a dude I disagreed with, he was a person who actively made life worse for Americans with his rulings on issues like abortion. I'm glad he's no longer actively making America worse.

I'm not attempting to push that view. I agree, whole hog, that his views on abortion were atrocious. However. his strict adherence to the dicture of the court was admirable, if poorly aimed. My ire is directed towards the younger millennials that pranced in the streets the moment he was pronounced dead.

When he died and my twitter feed was suddenly full of his old tracts, I have to say.... I was weirdly really glad about it. I got a LOT of laughs and a sort of macabre fascination even with the darker ones, because they were all equally outrageous. I thought for a long time when I was a kid that they were parodies, because they are SO INSANE. I really thought they were clever, if over the top, commentaries on fear-mongering and racism, gender issues, etc.

Did.... did he REALLY hurt the world with the pamphlets? I was wondering this as I was joyfully revisiting some of the old classics. Sure, he was a fucking asshole in real life, but he sort of unintentionally created these perfect microcosms of bigotry. Whether or not he meant them to be, they are sort of wonderful in their awfulness. There are tons of assholes in the world, but it doesn't invalidate everything in their lives.

Did anyone take them seriously? Did any people actually suffer because of these pamphlets? Did they cause kids to bully others, or put anyone's lives in danger? What was the actual impact? I have lived in pretty exclusively liberal areas for the last few decades, so how these tracts were received by other groups is unknown to me. Aside from the occasional creepy adult who was god-crazy and no amount of pamphlets could have really influenced them either way, did they ....do anything? Besides provide a real bounty of disgust and wonder for myself and likeminded nerds?
