Just wanted to say I love you all. You're a queer, mixed bunch of weirdoes that care and support one another through all kinds of bs. We've all somehow grown up and matured a lot together, even those that thought they were old when they got here. Everyone has changed over time and I keep reflecting on that, that I've managed to stay friends with enough of you for long enough that I can think about how we've all grown older and occasionally wiser, occasionally bitter, but different nonetheless. In most cases, more awesome than ever before.

I came in here a child and now I'm still basically a child but a child that maybe thinks a little more about the other person before speaking, that's less idealistic and more optimistic. I repeat myself, but I definitely did a lot of growing up here with you guys, and I'm damn lucky to know you all, past and present, even if they can not or will never read this.

You guys rock. Keep being awesome to each other.

<3 I second this sentiment. OB has had a profoundly positive impact on every part of who I am, truly. This is a sad day for America and the world, but these small collectives - the things that define a community - have power.

I promise I will fight for that greater good.

I'm going to grab onto all of this, but wonder if the election results still don't feel real to anyone else.

It's like Al Gore all over again, only... worse.

This Trump thing was such a complete refutation of so much that I believe in, and it's keeping me sane to know that there are small pockets of people who share a lot of my values.

As a straight male and one of the "good" minorities, I feel that I'll be okay, but I'm worried for everyone else who isn't a straight white male.

I love you all and I pray (in the nonsecular sense?) that you all stay safe.

This is way worse.
When Gore lost it was a sense of "oh well, only one person can win"
Now it's a much more deep sense of dread and fear.

I'm really scared you guys. I am wondering if we shouldn't start up another forum that's closed and run by patreon donations only. Anyone can still get in here, and I want to have a safe place. I am scared the safe places are disappearing, or are at risk of being made unsafe.

The only safe place to post on OB are Trick Roll and Thunderdome since those aren't easily view able by browsing the site and even non paid members can't see the actual thread content but just the thread titles when they click on those tabs.

Of all the things I've read since Thursday, this here is the one that made me take a breath and a step back

https://...wired.com/...are-handling-post-election-stress/

It helped me, hope it helps you all because I fucking love you people even if I sometimes seem like standoffish or taciturn or whatever

Anyone can join. If someone knew I posted here, it would be minutes of work. And we have so much on here.

yes you are right that anyone can join and see what you post.

Privacy in my opinion has become a myth.

That is what I'm talking about. If a stalker of mine, or my ex decided he had a grudge, he could sign up here and repost things I've said on linked in and what could I do

I'm not sure putting a Patreon wall up would help prevent that, unless it has some kind of authorization process I don't know about (I'm really only guessing how it works). A small fee would not be a barrier to someone who is interested in being horrible. It would really only block people who can't afford access to the safe space.

I think a better solution is invites/friend networking, but it's not perfect either. Social engineering is difficult to plan against. This site and the topics we discuss here assume a certain minimum level of trust (that's always been an issue with FOPs).

More and more I realize how much privacy and safety seem like things that only exist in obscurity, and it's become increasingly hard to find that obscurity and anonymity. It makes me afraid to participate in things; I can't imagine how it must be for others.
PS: Maybe the best we can do right now is be a place where we are vigilant on behalf of each other? I just don't like how ineffectively passive that can become.

I didn't explain my idea well. It would be invite only, with optional patreon subscriptions from members to keep it up. Payment is not tied to access.
PS: If no one pays, that means it doesnt matter enough to keep it going. I'm ok with that. I don't foresee that happening, though. I'd probably pay for it myself.
PS: Being vigilant is nothing. If someone came on here, they have easy access to a lot of very personal shit I put up here. I don't want to take it down, I want there to be a safe place, somewhere people can talk about difficult things. Learning from you guys has expanded my view of the world immensely.

Ah, yes, that makes sense. I understand now what you were thinking, and I agree that could work well.

I know, which is why I was uncomfortable even suggesting it. It's just very difficult to envision a proactive solution.
