Gen. Chat “MONTE CRISTOS ARE THE BEST SANDWICHES IN THE WORLD” by nineballninja

The Monte Cristo sandwich is the most genius thing ever created by human kind! Who knew that you could take a turkey sandwich, bread and deep fry it, and then sprinkle powder sugar on it and serve with a cranberry dipping sauce!?!?

-----------------------------------------------

Though this sandwich tends to vary from restaurant to restaurant, the basic sandwich is two slices of white bread containing ham, turkey, or chicken, and a slice of cheese are dipped in beaten egg and fried in butter. A classic Monte Cristo sandwich should come with a side of jelly to dip it in.

1910 - Most food historian generally think that the Monte Cristo sandwich is a variation of a French dish called Croque Monsieur. This original grilled cheese sandwich consisted of Gruyere cheese and lean ham between two slices of crust-less bread, fried in clarified butter. It was originally served in 1910 in a Paris cafe. This sandwich is still a popular snack or casual meal throughout France and Switzerland in most bars and cafes. It is usually made in a special sandwich grilling iron consisting of two hinged metal plates, each with two shell-shaped indentations. At most Paris cafes, the Croque Monsieur is no longer prepared as a square sandwich but rather as a one-sided tartine made with a large single slice of bread from a round loaf.

1930s to1960s - Many American cookbooks published in the 1930s to1960s featured this sandwich under different names such as French Sandwich, Toasted Ham Sandwich, and French Toasted Cheese Sandwich.

1950s - Although there are no existing documents to support this, it is felt that the Monte Cristo Sandwich was first served in southern California in the 1950s.

1966 - Disneyland in Anaheim, California also contributed to the trend of eating this sandwich. In 1966, it appeared on their menu of the Blue Bayou and Tahitian Terrace restaurants in New Orleans Square in Disneyland and has continued to be a popular menu item to this day.

Bennigan's serves a good version of these. Atleast the one in Alexandria, Va near CompUSA.

Damn, those things will fucking wreck you!

Also, it's not just turkey, there's ham in it too. At least that's how it is at Bennigans. I think the dipping jam is raspberry based, not cranberry.

Yeah, I used to eat a lot of them as a kid. Couldn't imagine eating one now.

I love Monte Cristos if they are made right. I know at some Bennigans around here they put too much batter on the sandwitch, it takes about 4 big bites before you taste the meat.

As far as the raspberry jam they give I usually dip my fries in it yum.

I had one before, but it had bacon on it, wan't deep fried, and had no dipping sauce, but then again that was in the food court at college. I am not a big fan of cranberry sauce though, but anything deep fried has to be good.

It all began yesterday. Upon rolling out of bed, I signed onto Otaku Booty to see what was new in the world. Lo and behold, down cameth Jimmy and said unto the internet: God's light shineth upon the Monte Cristo!
http://ob.tengoku.us/...sayplease/montecristo/IMG_0131.JPG

Intrigued, I called my compatriot, Ryan, and informed him of my desire to consume said sandwich. He said, "OMW." As it was a nice enough day outside, I went out to wait.
http://ob.tengoku.us/...tsayplease/montecristo/waiting.jpg
And I waited.
http://ob.tengoku.us/...sayplease/montecristo/waiting2.jpg
And waited.
http://ob.tengoku.us/...sayplease/montecristo/waiting3.jpg

FINALLY my ride arrived.
http://ob.tengoku.us/...please/montecristo/ridearrived.jpg

As there were no Bennigan'ses in the area, we had to drive quite a ways, but eventually we got there.
http://ob.tengoku.us/...ayplease/montecristo/bennigans.jpg

A guy I used to work with last summer was working there, but he ignored me and I did not take a picture of him. Because I am addicted to buffalo wings, I ordered some as an appetizer, but since they are not the focus of this excursion, I also did not take a picture of them. Ryan does not like buffalo wings, and so I must disown him as a friend.

Finally, we reach climax!
http://ob.tengoku.us/...please/montecristo/montecristo.jpg

The reaction?
http://ob.tengoku.us/noiwontsayplease/montecristo/yes.jpg

However, I underestimated this beast. I ate until I thought I was going to die, but barely made a dent into it.
http://ob.tengoku.us/...sayplease/montecristo/finished.jpg

The bill arrives.... and it's a perfect $30? Perhaps Monte Cristos and buffalo wings are.... the perfect foods?
http://ob.tengoku.us/...tsayplease/montecristo/perfect.jpg

There was another price to be paid.... waiting out in the sun had left me with a terrible burn.
http://ob.tengoku.us/noiwontsayplease/montecristo/burned.jpg

The end. Monte Cristos rule!

CURIOSITY SATISFIED.

I had one of these for the first time ever wandering around in the middle of the night at Anime Boston. I was starving and it was fantastic. I'm afraid that no other experience with a monte cristo will ever equal that one for me.

I tried Monte Christo's twice at different restaurants after my brother and friends were raving about it. Both were deep fried, both had ham . . . and both tasted like a sponge dipped in a deep frier! But if you like it, it's all good!

My fave sandwich would be a good old, Philly Cheesesteak from Gaetano's (a small chain of sammich and pizza shops throughout South Jersey), but that's just me . . . !
