What/Who determines the star added to posts? Do the mods add stars whenever they feel like it because they like the posts? Is it due to the number or replies or something else? Thanks

I think if you take into account "negative flags," you should have a negative star rating, too. Like use skulls, and have one to three skulls. This way people know which threads are generating hot flag action, instead of having well-placed negative flags count against a thread's rating.

If that makes any sense.

Negative flags are often an indicator of even more fun being present than positive ones, though.

Excatly my point. By having a "negative star" system, you'd keep the fun visible, AND you'd know it was mean-spirited fun. Skulls are no less fun than stars!
