Who ya gonna call? Nope, not the Ghostbusters!
Ichigo Kurosaki has been able to see ghosts for as long as he can remember. When he tries to save a young female ghost from being eaten by an evil spirit, he meets Rukia Kuchiki, a Death god. While fighting the evil spirit (called a Hollow), Rukia transfers her powers to Ichigo, making him a temporary Death god. Now it is up to Ichigo (with some help from Rukia) to heal the Hollows and send their spirits to the Soul Society/Heaven.
I am currently 12 episodes into the series and I love it. While it does seem to have a ‘monster of the day’ type of format, it’s interesting to see Ichigo’s transformation from a somewhat normal high school student into a Death god. It’s similar to Yu Yu Hakusho but the ‘humans fighting spirits’ theme works better here. The secondary characters are fairly typical (the cute girl, the tough girl, the tough untalkative guy, etc.) and that works well. They can all survive a few scenes on their own but there is still a team feeling when they are together. I’m looking forward to seeing more of the show, just to see how far they can take this before going too far.
