I caught a screening of the upcoming movie Sahara last night starring Matthew McConaughey, Penelope Cruz and Steve Zahn. McConaughy himself was there and started the movie off. He's a likable enough guy, but generally in these situations someone in his role (as executive producer) comes out AFTER the film to see what everyone thinks. The fact it was before, I didn't take as a good sign. It's based on the book of the same name by Clive Cussler. I've never read any of his books but maybe some of you have.
This is one of those films you start to forget about as you're leaving the theater and by the time you get to your car you've pretty much left it behind. The first 30 minutes make it seem you're in for a pretty awful movie but by the first chase scene things pick up to make things a bit more entertaining even though it's still pretty predictable. The real charm of the movie comes from Steve Zahn, who is one of those actors who makes anything he's in a bit better. McConaughey and Cruz don't have any chemistry at all. If you'd like to see it, wait for video.
McConaughey plays Dirk Pitt who's some adventurer, ex-soldier guy trying to find a missing boat from the cival war. Cruz plays a World Health Organization doctor who's trying to find the source of a plague starting to spread it's way over Africa. Their paths merge and they go up against the bad corporation and the bad general dictator.
