Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Tim Burton's films can be either great or mediocre but they're always visually stunning. I'd probably consider his worst film Planet of the Apes, but that's me. Now, Sweeney Todd is definitely one of his best and has joined my other favorites Edward Scissorhands and Ed Wood.
It's based on the broadway musical by Stephen Sondheim and I've never seen a live stage performance of it but the movie makes me want to see it. Benjamin Barker is sent to prison by a judge who wants Barker's wife for himself. Many years later, he returns to London calling himself Sweeney Todd intently focused on revenge. Having been a barber for many years, he sets up shop making plans to give pretty much anyone a very close shave.
There is lots of singing, so if that turns you off don't go. It also gets very bloody, so don't think a musical can't have a little gore in it.
