The producers of the new Yamato space opera anime project have confirmed their plans for a theatrical release this year at the Tokyo International Anime Fair 2009 on Wednesday. The project was first revealed last August when Yoshinobu Nishizaki, the producer of the original Space Battleship Yamato series and movies, announced the creation of the "Yamato Studio" in Tokyo.

Nishizaki's new project is set in 2220, or 21 years after the first Yamato story. An expanding black hole threatens Earth, so three hundred million people set forth into space as part of an emigration operation. The transport fleet is attacked, and the Yamato leads the counterstrike. 38-year-old Susumu Kodai, the hero of the first series, is now a space captain with a daughter named Miyuki with his wife Yuki (the heroine of the first series).

I wish I was more excited about this. Space Battleship Yamato (Star Blazers in North America) is literally my favorite thing ever; something I've enjoyed for nearly three decades. It's been said that the stirring theme song, still popular in Japan, was almost a second national anthem during the series' heyday. But the new series is surely being made without creator Leiji Matsumoto, who has long been at odds with producer Yoshinobu Nishizaki. The latter Yamato movies, also made without Matsumoto's input, were a little embarrassing.

There's always hope, of course. Earth didn't give up hope when threatened by those EVIL GAMILONS. RIGHT?
